What is a 10 KB test file?
Ten kilobytes is a meaningful threshold for web performance. A new TCP connection usually starts with a congestion window of ten segments, roughly 14.6 KB, so a response of 10 KB can be delivered without waiting for an acknowledgement.
For upload testing it is the smallest size at which buffering starts to matter, and it is larger than the 8 KB that many servers allow for a single request header.
In everyday terms: Three to four pages of plain text, or a small thumbnail image.
Limits near 10 KB
Default limits in widely used software that a 10 KB file is useful for testing. Defaults change between versions, so confirm them in the documentation for the version you run.
| System | Limit | What happens at 10 KB |
|---|---|---|
| TCP initial congestion window | About 14.6 KB (10 segments) | A 10 KB response fits in the first flight of packets; the 25 KB sample does not. |
| nginx and Apache request headers | 8 KB per header line by default | Data this large must go in the request body. |
| webpack asset modules | 8 KB by default | Assets over the threshold are emitted as files instead of data URIs. |
Good for
- Testing critical-path payload budgets
- Unit tests for parsers with a few dozen records
- Checking thumbnail and icon handling
Transfer time
How long 10,240 bytes take to move, before any compression.
| 1 Mbit/s (slow mobile or uplink) | under 1 second |
|---|---|
| 10 Mbit/s (basic broadband) | under 1 second |
| 100 Mbit/s (fast broadband) | under 1 second |

10 KB files: questions
- How many records are in a 10 KB data file?
- It depends on the format. A 10 KB CSV holds roughly a hundred rows, while XML of the same size holds far fewer. The exact count is on each download page.
