What is a 5 KB test file?

A 5 KB file is still tiny, but it crosses the first limits that web developers meet. It is larger than the 4,096 bytes a browser will store in a single cookie and larger than the default threshold below which some build tools inline assets.

It is a convenient size for testing data that is moved in places not designed for files: form fields, headers, query strings and local storage keys.

In everyday terms: About two pages of plain text, or a small icon.

Limits near 5 KB

Default limits in widely used software that a 5 KB file is useful for testing. Defaults change between versions, so confirm them in the documentation for the version you run.

Good for

  • Testing storage of small blobs in databases and caches
  • Checking asset-inlining thresholds in bundlers
  • Fast upload tests with a body larger than one packet
