What is a 10 MB test file?
Ten megabytes is the classic "large upload" test and the size at which platform limits start to bite. Amazon API Gateway refuses payloads over 10 MB, Spring Boot caps a whole multipart request at 10 MB, and PHP by default limits a POST body to 8 MB.
Transfers of this size take long enough to interrupt. Use it to test progress bars, cancellation, retries and timeouts, and to see whether your server buffers the whole upload in memory before handling it.
In everyday terms: About a minute of CD-quality WAV audio, or a 50-page scanned PDF.
Limits near 10 MB
Default limits in widely used software that a 10 MB file is useful for testing. Defaults change between versions, so confirm them in the documentation for the version you run.
| System | Limit | What happens at 10 MB |
|---|---|---|
| Amazon API Gateway | 10 MB payload | A 10 MB file in a multipart or base64 body is over the limit. |
| Spring Boot multipart | 10 MB per request by default (max-request-size) | Exceeded once form overhead is added. |
| PHP | 8 MB POST body by default (post_max_size) | Rejected before the script runs. |
| Amazon S3 multipart upload | 5 MiB minimum part size | This file splits into exactly two minimum-sized parts. |
| Email attachments | Commonly 20 to 25 MB per message | 10 MB fits, at about 13.3 MB once encoded. |
Good for
- Testing upload limits on managed platforms
- Exercising chunked and resumable uploads
- Checking timeouts and retry logic

10 MB files: questions
- How long does a 10 MB download take?
- About 8 seconds at 10 Mbit/s and under a second at 100 Mbit/s. On a 1 Mbit/s uplink the same upload takes nearly a minute and a half.
- Does a 10 MB PDF have a lot of pages?
- Not necessarily. Our 10 MB PDF has a few pages of text followed by full-page images, because images are what make real PDFs large.
