What is a PNG file?

PNG compresses images without losing any information and supports an alpha channel for smooth transparency. It works best on flat colour and sharp edges, and produces large files for photographs.

A PNG file is an eight-byte signature followed by chunks. Each chunk has a length, a four-letter type and a CRC checksum, so corruption is detected rather than silently displayed.

What to test for

These are the behaviours that most often go wrong when software handles PNG files.

Strengths of PNG

  • Lossless, so screenshots, diagrams and text stay perfectly sharp.
  • Full alpha transparency.

Limitations of PNG

  • Photographs are several times larger than the equivalent JPEG.
  • No animation in the baseline format.

Typical uses of PNG test files

  • Testing image uploads that must stay lossless
  • Checking transparency handling
  • Testing image optimisation and conversion
  • Verifying dimension limits

Software that opens PNG

  • Every browser and image viewer
  • Screenshot tools on all platforms
  • libpng, sharp, Pillow and ImageMagick libraries

PNG sample files: questions

Why are the sized PNG samples stored without compression?
It makes the size exact and predictable: the pixel data is written in uncompressed deflate blocks, so byte count follows pixel count. The files are fully valid PNGs. For a normally compressed PNG, use the 1920 × 1080 test card.
Is there a sample with transparency?
Yes. The curated library includes a 512 × 512 PNG with an alpha gradient.
What is the MIME type of a PNG file?
The MIME type is image/png. The file extension is .png.
Is a sample PNG file the same as a dummy or example PNG file?
Yes. Sample, test, dummy and example PNG files are different names for the same thing: a PNG file with known contents that stands in for a real one. Any file on this page will do wherever a tutorial or a test plan asks for a dummy PNG file.
