What is a WebP file?
WebP usually produces smaller files than JPEG or PNG at similar quality. It has a lossy mode based on the VP8 video codec and a separate lossless mode, and either can carry an alpha channel.
The file is a RIFF container, the same chunk structure used by WAV audio. All current browsers display WebP, but older software and some upload validators still reject it.
How to recognise a WebP file
| Extension | .webp |
|---|---|
| MIME type | image/webp |
| Specification | RFC 9649 and the WebP container specification |
| Compression | Lossy (VP8) or lossless (VP8L) |
| Maximum dimensions | 16,383 × 16,383 pixels (lossy) |
| Transparency and animation | Both supported |
What to test for
These are the behaviours that most often go wrong when software handles WebP files.
- Allow-lists written years ago often contain only JPEG, PNG and GIF, so WebP uploads fail on otherwise working forms.
- Sniffers that read only the first four bytes see RIFF and may confuse WebP with WAV or AVI.
Strengths of WebP
- Usually smaller than JPEG or PNG at comparable quality.
- One format covers lossy, lossless, transparency and animation.
Limitations of WebP
- Older software and some upload validators still reject it.
- Slower to encode than JPEG.
Typical uses of WebP test files
- Testing whether upload forms accept modern formats
- Checking conversion to and from JPEG and PNG
- Testing image CDNs and optimisation
Software that opens WebP
- Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari
- libwebp, sharp, Pillow and ImageMagick
- Most current image editors

WebP sample files: questions
- Are the sample WebP files lossy or lossless?
- Lossless. They use the VP8L bitstream in an extended container with a small XMP metadata chunk.
- What is the MIME type of a WebP file?
- The MIME type is image/webp. The file extension is .webp.
- Is a sample WebP file the same as a dummy or example WebP file?
- Yes. Sample, test, dummy and example WebP files are different names for the same thing: a WebP file with known contents that stands in for a real one. Any file on this page will do wherever a tutorial or a test plan asks for a dummy WebP file.
