What is a JPG file?

JPEG compresses photographs by discarding detail the eye is unlikely to notice. Images are split into 8 × 8 pixel blocks, transformed with a discrete cosine transform and quantised; a quality setting controls how much is thrown away.

A JPEG file is a series of segments, each introduced by a marker. Metadata such as EXIF camera data lives in its own segments and can be removed without touching the picture.

How to recognise a JPG file

The first bytes of every file. Start-of-image marker followed by the first segment marker.

What to test for

These are the behaviours that most often go wrong when software handles JPG files.

Strengths of JPG

  • Very small files for photographs at good visual quality.
  • Supported by every device, browser and application.

Limitations of JPG

  • Lossy: detail is discarded, and quality falls each time the image is re-saved.
  • No transparency, and visible artefacts around text and sharp edges.

Typical uses of JPG test files

  • Testing image upload, resize and thumbnail pipelines
  • Checking maximum file-size and dimension rules
  • Measuring image optimisation
  • Testing lazy loading and responsive images

Software that opens JPG

  • Every browser, phone and image viewer
  • Photoshop, GIMP and Lightroom
  • libjpeg-turbo, sharp, Pillow and ImageMagick libraries

JPG sample files: questions

What do the sample JPGs show?
A test card with colour bars, a grey ramp, a checkerboard and a gradient, with light grain so the file compresses like a photograph.
Why do larger samples have larger pixel dimensions?
The quality setting is fixed at 90, so the only way to reach a bigger file is a bigger picture. The dimensions are listed on each download page.
What is the MIME type of a JPG file?
The MIME type is image/jpeg. The file extension is .jpg.
Is a sample JPG file the same as a dummy or example JPG file?
Yes. Sample, test, dummy and example JPG files are different names for the same thing: a JPG file with known contents that stands in for a real one. Any file on this page will do wherever a tutorial or a test plan asks for a dummy JPG file.
