What is in this file

An object container file whose header carries the writer schema as JSON, followed by 78 binary-encoded customer records in 1 block. 121 bytes of filler in an extra header metadata entry, which readers ignore, bring the file to the exact size.

Records78
Blocks1, of up to 100 records
SchemaCustomer record, 12 fields
Types usedlong, string, double, boolean, enum, union, and the uuid and date logical types
Codecnull (not compressed)
Sync marker16 bytes after every block

First bytes of the file

The first 64 bytes of sample-avro-10kb.avro as a hex dump: offset, bytes, then the same bytes as text. The Avro signature is 4F 62 6A 01.

Where 10 KB matters

A 10,240-byte file that still arrives in the first round trip of a new connection. These are the default limits a file of this size is useful for testing:

SystemLimitNote
TCP initial congestion windowAbout 14.6 KB (10 segments)A 10 KB response fits in the first flight of packets; the 25 KB sample does not.
nginx and Apache request headers8 KB per header line by defaultData this large must go in the request body.
webpack asset modules8 KB by defaultAssets over the threshold are emitted as files instead of data URIs.

All 10 KB sample files

Use this file for

  • Checking thumbnail and icon handling
  • Verifying handling of logical types such as dates and UUIDs
  • Load-testing readers with many blocks

Testing notes for Avro

  • No media type is registered for Avro, so files arrive labelled application/octet-stream as often as anything else. Detection has to rely on the four signature bytes.
  • A logical type is an annotation on a plain type: a date is stored as an int counting days since 1970. A reader that ignores the annotation returns a number where a date was expected.
