1 KB Avro sample file
An Avro file of exactly 1,024 bytes. It is a valid Apache Avro object container file file, generated for this site and checked with an independent parser. Use it wherever you need a 1 KB sample, test or dummy Avro file.

What is in this file
An object container file whose header carries the writer schema as JSON, followed by 1 binary-encoded customer record in 1 block. 125 bytes of filler in an extra header metadata entry, which readers ignore, bring the file to the exact size.
| Records | 1 |
|---|---|
| Blocks | 1, of up to 100 records |
| Schema | Customer record, 12 fields |
| Types used | long, string, double, boolean, enum, union, and the uuid and date logical types |
| Codec | null (not compressed) |
| Sync marker | 16 bytes after every block |
First bytes of the file
The first 64 bytes of sample-avro-1kb.avro as a hex dump: offset, bytes, then the same bytes as text. The Avro signature is 4F 62 6A 01.

Where 1 KB matters
The smallest practical test file: 1,024 bytes, small enough to travel in a single network packet. These are the default limits a file of this size is useful for testing:
| System | Limit | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Ethernet | 1,500 bytes (typical MTU) | A 1 KB payload fits in one packet with its headers. |
| Browser cookies | 4,096 bytes per cookie | 1 KB is well inside the limit; the 5 KB sample is over it. |
Use this file for
- Smoke tests in CI that must run in milliseconds
- Testing ingestion jobs and bulk loaders
- Checking schema resolution between a writer and a reader
Testing notes for Avro
- A logical type is an annotation on a plain type: a date is stored as an int counting days since 1970. A reader that ignores the annotation returns a number where a date was expected.
- An Avro message taken from Kafka is not a container file. It has no header and no embedded schema, only a schema ID, so tools made for .avro files cannot open it.

Questions about this file
- Is this file exactly 1 KB?
- Yes. It is 1,024 bytes, which is 1 KB in the binary units that operating systems and server limits use (1 KB = 1,024 bytes).
- What is inside the 1 KB Avro file?
- An object container file whose header carries the writer schema as JSON, followed by 1 binary-encoded customer record in 1 block. 125 bytes of filler in an extra header metadata entry, which readers ignore, bring the file to the exact size.
- What schema do the Avro samples use?
- A Customer record of twelve fields: a long, strings, a double, a boolean, an enum, a union with null, and two logical types, uuid and date. The schema is in the header of every file as JSON.
