Where 5 MB matters

A 5,242,880-byte file: the size of a phone photo and the minimum part size for S3 multipart uploads. These are the default limits a file of this size is useful for testing:

SystemLimitNote
PHP2 MB per uploaded file by default (upload_max_filesize)A 5 MB upload fails on an untuned PHP installation.
Vercel Functions4.5 MB request bodyLarger uploads must go directly to object storage.
Amazon S3 multipart upload5 MiB minimum part sizeThis file is exactly one minimum part.
AWS Lambda6 MB synchronous invocation payload5 MB of binary data exceeds it once base64-encoded.
Browser localStorageAbout 5 MB per originStoring this file as text fills the quota.
Django2.5 MB in memory by defaultLarger uploads are streamed to a temporary file instead of held in memory.

Use this file for

  • Testing image resizing and memory use
  • Verifying that an allow-list accepts video/quicktime
  • Testing thumbnail and duration extraction

Testing notes for MOV

  • Browser playback is uneven. Safari plays MOV; other browsers depend on the codec inside and on how the server labels the file. Convert to MP4 for anything shown on a web page.
  • Phone footage stores its orientation as a rotation flag instead of rotating the pixels. A pipeline that ignores the flag produces sideways video.

Questions about this file

Is this file exactly 5 MB?
Yes. It is 5,242,880 bytes, which is 5 MB in the binary units that operating systems and server limits use (1 KB = 1,024 bytes).
What is inside the 5 MB MOV file?
2,793 frames (1 min 33 s) of a synthetic test pattern with a frame counter, looping every six seconds, in one H.264 video track of a QuickTime movie. 618 bytes of a trailing "free" atom bring the file to the exact size.
What is the difference between MOV and MP4?
Very little in structure: MP4 was standardised from the QuickTime format. MOV allows more codecs and Apple-specific features, while MP4 is the version every browser and device is built to play.
